The global specialty re/insurer announced four new hires in Singapore to further its regional expansion

Canopius has announced a slew of Singapore hires in a bid to roll out its expansion across the Asia Pacific region.

All four of the re/insurer’s new recruits will be based in the company’s Singapore office which opened a decade ago.

Mathew Gundersen joins Canopius from Berkshire Hathaway as head of operations for Asia Pacific and Middle East and North Africa (MENA), based in Singapore.

Paul Hackett joins as head of marine, energy and engineering for Asia Pacific and MENA, formerly director of marine at Aspen Singapore.

Dale Taylor comes in as property underwriting leader in December, joining from Tokio Marine Kiln where he was tasked with growing TMK’s property portfolio in Singapore.

Matt Bird joins in January as crisis management underwriter for Asia Pacific, after leaving QBE where as a senior underwriter he previously developed the insurer’s terrorism and political violence book in Asia.

“As we build on the very sound base we have already achieved, we are strengthening our regional infrastructure in keeping with our underwriting expansion and ambitions,” said Mark Newman, regional chief executive for Asia Pacific and MENA at Canopius.

The four new hires at Canopius follow two senior hires announced in September.

The company announced that Yann Marmonier would be joining as the company’s head of insurance for Asia Pacific and MENA. Marmonier was formerly managing director at Aspen Singapore.

Canopius also announced that Nattakorn Wattanaumphaipong had left Swiss Re to become its reinsurance head for Asia Pacific.
