Catlin Re Switzerland, the continental European reinsurance business of Lloyd’s insurer Catlin, has opened a Madrid office.
From 1 July the new office will write property, casualty and specialty classes of reinsurance business for clients in Spain and Portugal. The office will complement Catlin Group’s existing Barcelona office, which writes direct insurance in the Iberian market.
The new Madrid office will be headed by ex-Swiss Re underwriter Julio Sáez, who joined Catlin on 1 June 2011. He was previously head of engineering and senior underwriter for Spain, Portugal and Latin America at Swiss Re.
“The opening of the Madrid office under the direction of Julio Sáez demonstrates our confidence in the Iberian market’s long-term prospects and the benefits of maintaining close relationships with our clients,” said Catlin Re Switzerland chief executive Peter Schmidt in a statement.
Separately, Catlin Re Switzerland has appointed Daniel Gartner as casualty underwriting director. He joined the firm on 1 June from Munich Re, where he was most recently a casualty underwriting consultant.
“The addition of Daniel Gantner allows us to offer comprehensive reinsurance solutions across all lines of business,” Schmidt said.
