Property treaty veteran will relocate from London as Brit continues expansion of its Bermuda reinsurance platform

Brit has appointed James Winn as chief underwriting officer and head of office at Brit Re in Bermuda.
Winn (pictured) will lead Brit’s Bermuda operations and oversee the continued growth of its reinsurance platform on the island.
He is currently managing director, property treaty, for Brit in London and is expected to relocate to Bermuda towards the end of 2026, subject to relevant approvals.
Winn brings more than 35 years of North American property treaty experience across both the Lloyd’s and Bermuda markets.
He will succeed Jonathan Stephenson, who will hand over the role towards the end of the year following a planned transition.
Brit said Stephenson had helped grow the business to more than $250m of third-party premium over the past two years, while also developing the underwriting platform and broadening the product suite.
That expansion has included US direct and facultative (D&F), which Brit said is the latest addition to the Brit Re offering.
Sam Lewis, assistant vice president, and Jolie Broomhead, assistant vice president, will also move from London to Bermuda to support growth in casualty treaty and D&F respectively.
Jon Sullivan, group chief underwriting officer at Brit, said: “We’re delighted that James has agreed to take on the leadership of our Bermuda platform as we look to the next phase of its growth.
“Since its launch two years ago, Brit Re has grown significantly and we continue to be excited by the opportunity to further build the Brit brand in Bermuda.”
Sullivan added: “I would also like to thank Jonathan, who has played a pivotal role in establishing the platform we have today and we are pleased that he will be with us until early 2027 to ensure a seamless handover.”
