MS Amlin appoints former Brit CUO to top job as insurer looks to next phase of growth

Christiern Dart - CEO - MS Amlin

MS Amlin has named Christiern Dart as its next CEO, as the Lloyd’s market global re/insurer positions itself for continued growth and performance under fresh leadership.

Dart (pictured) will assume the role in January 2026, subject to regulatory approval. He joins from Brit, where he served as group chief underwriting officer (CUO) and spent 17 years in a variety of senior roles, including active underwriter for Lloyd’s syndicates 2987 and 2988.

He will succeed Andrew Carrier, who is stepping down after three years as CEO and a total of five years with the business.

Carrier will remain with MS Amlin until the end of 2025 to oversee a smooth handover, before moving into a new role as executive officer at Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (MSI), the parent company of MS Amlin.

Shinichiro Funabiki, president and CEO of MSI, said Dart’s appointment marked a new chapter for the business: “His leadership and strategic approach at Brit clearly demonstrate his talent, and I speak for the board and the broader executive team in MSI when I say how excited I am for him to start his new role with us and take the company to the next stage of its development.”

Funabiki paid tribute to Carrier’s legacy at the firm: “He brought a renewed underwriting discipline to the business that has left such a positive mark on our company consciousness that his presence will be felt long after he moves into his new role as executive officer for MSI. We know Andrew’s deep professional expertise, along with his sincerity, honesty and genuine compassion, will continue to bring value that is rare in today’s world.”

Dart brings more than 30 years of experience in the London and global reinsurance markets. As group CUO at Brit, he managed a portfolio of over £2bn in underwriting capacity and led the company through several major market events. He began his underwriting career in 1994 with CNA Re, and later held senior roles at Liberty Syndicates and Brit.

Commenting on his appointment, Dart said: “I’m so excited to make the move to MS Amlin, and to continue the excellent work of the entire business. MS Amlin is such a well-respected name in the market, and with the unmatched support of MSI and the wider MS&AD group, I know exciting opportunities and times lie ahead for us all.”

Carrier’s tenure as CEO saw MS Amlin return to financial strength, with 2023 marking its best result in over a decade. His leadership was credited with restoring underwriting discipline and guiding the company through a period of transformation.

Dart’s appointment continues a period of leadership renewal and strategic focus across the MS Amlin platform, as the business looks to build on recent success and further integrate with MSI’s global ambitions.
