London market firm Argenta has appointed Simon Saunders as unit head, marine reinsurance, ahead of Stephen Haynes’ planned retirement in January 2027
Argenta Syndicate Management has appointed Simon Saunders as unit head, marine reinsurance, effective July 2026.

Saunders will report to Heath Callan, divisional head of energy and marine, and will work closely with Stephen Haynes, current unit head, marine reinsurance, to ensure a smooth handover ahead of Haynes’ planned retirement in January 2027.
He joins Argenta with more than 25 years’ experience in reinsurance underwriting across marine, energy, aviation and specialty treaty lines.
Saunders was most recently a senior marine underwriter at Swiss Re, focused on treaty placements and portfolio evaluation in the London Market.
He previously held senior leadership roles at Barbican Syndicate 1955, later Arch, including head of reinsurance, head of marine division and head of short tail lines.
Earlier in his career, Saunders was a partner at JLT Re and held roles at Aon and Agnew Higgins Pickering.
In his new role, Saunders will be responsible for underwriting Argenta’s marine reinsurance treaty portfolio, strengthening its position in international markets and building on established broker relationships.
Callan said: “Simon’s extensive knowledge and many years of senior underwriting experience in foreign market treaty business make him a strong fit for this role.
“He will work closely with the team to ensure continuity in our treaty portfolio, while bringing additional depth and experience to this important area of the business.”
Ian Burford, underwriting director at Argenta, added: “We are pleased to welcome Simon to Argenta.
“He brings significant technical expertise and international experience, along with a strong track record in portfolio management.
“His appointment further strengthens our underwriting capability in the treaty market,” he added.
