Succession plan sees Martin Jackson take the helm as long-serving leader Simon Mason retires

Apollo has announced a series of senior promotions within its marine, energy and transportation (MET) division as Simon Mason prepares to retire on 1 January 2026.
Mason, who joined Apollo in 2013, will remain available through the upcoming reinsurance renewals to support a smooth transition.
He is credited with helping to build its MET division, shaping Apollo’s market position across key classes.
Martin Jackson will be promoted to head of marine, energy and transportation as part of the planned succession, while retaining his role as class leader for aviation.
Mark Phythian will become deputy head of MET and Ciara Sheikh will take on the role of class leader for cargo, Apollo said.
Steve Portman will continue as class leader for energy, alongside Rob Johnston for marine and energy liability, Iain Henstridge for hull and Richard Panter for specie.
Apollo thanked Mason for his service and congratulated the promoted team members.
James Slaughter said Mason’s contribution over more than a decade had been central to Apollo’s success in the sector.
“Simon has been a cornerstone of Apollo’s marine, energy and transportation business since joining in 2013,” he said.
“His leadership, technical insight and commitment have left an enduring legacy, and we wish him every success in his well-earned retirement.
“These promotions reflect the exceptional depth of talent we have within Apollo and the MET division, and I am confident they will continue to drive growth across our specialist lines,” he added.
