Miller has appointed Paul Cumberland as its first chief broking officer, a newly created global role reporting directly to group CEO James Hands.

Cumberland brings more than 25 years of experience across broking, underwriting and portfolio management, with previous senior roles at Aon, Markel and Marsh.

He joins from Howden, where he was executive director leading on portfolio analytics and optimisation, delegated placement, market consultancy and strategic trading.

In his new role, Cumberland will lead Miller’s strategic market engagement, while also driving data-driven innovation and service enhancements, the broker said.

His arrival follows a series of acquisitions and senior hires as the broker continues to expand internationally, it added.

Group CEO Jmaes Hands said Cumberland’s appointment underlined Miller’s growth ambitions.

“As our international proposition continues to grow, Paul’s appointment further reflects the significant scale and ambition of our business,” he said.

“His wealth of experience will be invaluable as we sharpen our strategic trading and double down on our position as the broker of choice for those seeking independence, specialism and service. Paul will be at the forefront of helping us deliver a unified proposition to the market and I am delighted to have him on board.”

Cumberland said he was “excited and privileged” to be joining the firm.

“In this new role, I look forward to uniting the company’s assets into a cohesive proposition for both clients and insurers and further accelerating our ambitious growth plans,” he added.
