Alderman Bronek Masojada will be supported for election as Lord Mayor of the City of London for 2026/27 after Tim Hailes withdrew from consideration
Alderman Tim Hailes has withdrawn from consideration for election as Lord Mayor of the City of London for 2026/27.
As part of its established succession planning for the mayoralty, the Court of Aldermen has decided to support Alderman Bronek Masojada (pictured), who had been the candidate for 2027/28, for election in 2026/27.
The City of London Corporation said Hailes notified the Court of Aldermen of his withdrawal on 27 September.
Hailes had been the preferred candidate for the mayoralty to succeed Dame Susan Langley
Hailes is a former senior lawyer at investment firm JP Morgan and a prominent diversity and inclusion campaigner who had been in line to become the City of London’s first out gay Lord Mayor.
He has reportedly withdrawn his candidacy after learning of criminal proceedings involving someone “closely connected” to a former employer.
The Corporation said: “As part of established succession planning for the Mayoralty, the Court of Aldermen have decided that Alderman Bronek Masojada, the candidate for 2027/28, will be supported for election to the Mayoralty in 2026/27.”
The election will continue as planned at Common Hall on Tuesday 29 September.
The statement added: “The Lord Mayor elect will be formally admitted into office on 13 November 2026.”
