BMS Re's Jonathan Morris on how he got to where he is today
How did you make it to where you are today?
Hard work and being fortunate in working with good people, both colleagues and clients.
How has the industry changed since you first joined it?
The use of technological support for the industry has increased dramatically. The market I operate in now is far more sophisticated; not just the underwriting but also in the use of capital.
What would you say are the key challenges ahead for you and the industry?
Maintaining a sense of continuity and a relationship – between all parties rather than a spot market approach. We need to offer relevant and worthwhile cover to our client base, which becomes difficult in certain sectors as the financial size of some entities dwarfs our own.
What are the biggest opportunities?
Some of the so-called emerging markets have the potential to introduce vast amounts of premium income into our industry. As long as this can be underwritten profitably, it should provide welcome growth.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in reinsurance?
Work hard and be honest in your approach. Also try to blend the technical with the human touch.
What is the biggest mistake you’ve made?
Not being a catastrophe underwriter!
What comes to mind when you think of your friends and contemporaries in the market?
What a pleasant working environment we have, and a hope that it can be maintained and passed down to others.
What do you do to relax?
Walking with my two dogs.
