Life insurer has “majority of US customers’ data stolen” by a ‘social engineering’ hack, according to a report by technology news site TechCrunch and re-reported by Reuters
Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America has suffered a cyber-attack and data loss, it has emerged over the weekend.
Hackers stole the personal information of “the majority” of Allianz Life’s 1.4 million US customers, as well as financial professionals, and some Allianz Life US employees, according to the report, published by technology startups news website TechCrunch on Saturday, subsequently reported by newswire Reuters.
A third-party cloud system used for customer relationship management (CRM) was penetrated by cyber criminals on July 16, which was discovered the next day.
The insurer reported the incident to the US state of Maine’s attorney general but did not in its initial report provide the number of customers affected.
“On July 16, 2025, a malicious threat actor gained access to a third-party, cloud-based CRM system used by Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America,” a spokesperson for Allianz Life told Reuters in an emailed statement.
The insurance company said it had notified the FBI and based on its investigation there was no evidence that other company systems were accessed, such as its policy administration system.
“The threat actor was able to obtain personally identifiable data related to the majority of Allianz Life’s customers, financial professionals, and select Allianz Life employees, using a social engineering technique,” the statement added.
